Movement; New Work by David Hawley Artists Statement

I apply paint unconventionally with brooms, squeegees, rags and canvas boards; these amplify body gestures and actions. After days of preparation, multiple works are made during one brief painting session. Intuitive method increases the scope of possibility as things considered external to painting may be internalised into its systems. There is a movement of what painting is and what it may become.

Reality no longer appears essentially static, but affirms itself dynamically, as continuity and variation. What was immobile and frozen in our perception is warmed and set in motion. Everything comes to life around us, everything is revitalized within us. A great impulse sweeps forward beings and things. We feel ourselves uplifted, borne along, carried away. We are more fully alive and this increase of life brings with it the conviction that grave philosophical enigmas can be resolved…
Henri Bergson La Pensée et le mouvant 1934
