Artist Statement
Flowers have held symbolic meanings for centuries and not only do individual flowers hold meaning, but the way they are arranged together can also tell a story or convey deeper meaning.
In Victorian times which were particularly repressed, rules around male and female interactions were strict and formal, and complex stories with detailed meanings became known to have their own language through flowers.
The majority of images in this exhibition reflect the genus H. bracteatum (immortelle), the golden everlasting flower. Xeros in Greek meaning dry, Chrysos – golden and Helios - sun. This opportunistic annual which is short lived, comes up for water after rain, germinating a flower which then dies. The cut flower lasts longer than the plant. In Hindu culture, garlands of this flower decorate the deceased before the last sacrifice. The bracts, unlike leaves or flower parts of other plants, are petal like, stiff and papery and arranged in rows which curl over and enclose the florets. They are made up of dead cells.
I draw and paint them from the kitchen, bathroom, through to the bedroom preferring to work at home, illuminated by windows overlooking the back garden. I paint by natural light, usually first thing in the morning or when the light is best and arrange several still life compositions on tables, so that I can observe them, even if I am not actually painting them. When I do start drawing and painting, I value privacy, and a need for peace and tranquillity.
My work is not a tradition of the past, but rather a philosophical commitment to the daily experience of observing nature.
